What to wear
Short answer: whatever you're comfortable in. Nobody checks your roots at the gate. Here's a first-timer's guide, from Ceilidh. 🐮
🏟️ At a Highland Games (as a spectator)
- Casual is perfect. Jeans or shorts, a t-shirt and a layer. Most visitors don't wear a kilt.
- Comfy shoes. You'll walk on grass, gravel and the odd muddy patch between the heavy events, the dance stage and the pipe band field.
- A wee touch of tartan, if you like: a scarf, cap, tie or socks. It's a fun nod, and nobody expects it.
- Bring: a hat, sunscreen, water, a folding chair or blanket, cash for the vendor tents, and ear plugs for little ones near massed bands.
👗 Kilt basics & etiquette
- Do I need a clan tartan? No. Anyone can wear a district or national tartan. In Canada, the Maple Leaf tartan is for everyone, and many provinces and cities have their own. "Universal" tartans like Black Watch (also called Government) are worn by all sorts of people too.
- Wearing a clan tartan you're not connected to? Generally fine, as long as you wear it respectfully. Clan tartans are traditionally worn by family members, and most clans welcome friends wearing them. Just don't claim to be a member. A few tartans are restricted (royal or personal ones). If in doubt, ask the clan society. Find your family tartan.
- The outfit: a kilt sits at the natural waist (higher than trousers) and the hem lands mid-knee. Add kilt hose (socks) with flashes, a sporran in front, and a sgian-dubh, a small knife tucked in the right sock. Day wear is a shirt or sweater, and evening wear adds a Prince Charlie or Argyll jacket.
- Women's Highland dress: a tartan sash over the shoulder, a kilted skirt or tartan dress, or an arisaid (shawl). Any of these looks great.
- The famous question: what's worn under a kilt is entirely your own business. 😉
🥃 Burns Night & ceilidhs
- Burns Supper: dress like you would for a nice dinner out. Some come in full Highland evening dress, others wear a jacket and tie or a dress. Add a tartan tie, sash or scarf if you have one. See our Burns Night 2027 guide.
- Ceilidh dance: wear something you can move and spin in, plus flat shoes with some grip. It gets warm, so pick layers you can shed.
- St Andrew's balls are usually the dressiest night of the year: formal wear or evening Highland dress.
🌦️ Alberta weather tips
- Pack layers. A summer games day in the foothills can go from a chilly morning to 28°C and back again by late afternoon.
- The sun is strong at altitude. Calgary and Canmore sit above 1,000 m, so wear a hat and sunscreen even when it's cloudy.
- Bring a rain shell. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast. Most games carry on, but pipe band contests can pause for lightning.
- Wool kilts are warm. They're grand on a cool day and toasty in July. A lighter "casual" kilt or poly-viscose blend helps in the heat.
- Burns Night in January: it can be −30°C. Wear warm boots and your parka over the kilt, then change your shoes inside. Kilt hose won't keep your knees warm!
